Malaysia is the birthplace of Tamil hip hop, and the talents that have been formed on this soil have greatly influenced the tide of Tamil hip hop on an international scale. One of the most exciting new voices to have come into the limelight in recent times is the young Klang native, OG Bangerz. He had debuted his stage performance for the first time on Astro’s Rap Porkalam Season 2, and due to his immense amount of talent and dedication, the young star won the prestigious title of Champion along with a cash prize of RM20,000. The exciting news surrounding this talented rapper is that he is about to release his first ever single, under the record label Highlife Records MY.
OG Bangerz comes from humble beginnings, where becoming a renowned artist would have been seen as an unattainable dream. Yet the young, ambitious talent did not give up on his art; instead, he defied his circumstances and made a world for himself where his music became a space for self-expression and community building. OG Bangerz had forged a new identity for himself through the art of rap in his teen years. His rebellious teen spirit had landed him in a troubling situation that scared both him and his parents, so as a way to channel his energy into meaningful art, he turned towards rapping.
I was angry at myself for the incident that happened. I had disappointed my family and friends because of it. I realised that I could travel on a good path instead through rapping, and that’s when I started recording on my phone.
Since submerging himself in this new artistic expression, OG Bangerz has worked relentlessly towards materialising his complete potential as a rapper. His first single is the culmination of 14 years of hard work and conviction towards his boundless aspirations. OG Bangerz has worked on fantastic tracks like Nagaiki, produced by Highthash, that featured both Lalaboii and Groovycha along with him. Some of his other notable works are the songs 1997, which featured DJ Nexto and the song Peresu, which was another collaborative rap that featured OG Bangerz, Lalaboii, and Groovycha together.
The rising star has since had several stage performances that have all been greatly supported by his fans. Many had seen him give a stellar performance at High On U1 and Heart Of Harris 4.0. These fantastic opportunities provide incredible exposure to aspiring musicians in the international music industry. It showcases both the capacity of homegrown talents and that their art is on par and unique when performed on stages with artists from other nations.
