The renowned Tamil Language Society of University Malaya is currently holding its 37th Peravai Kathaigal Competition from now until October 16th. The event is a short story competition that is conducted internationally for Tamil enthusiasts all over the world to partake in. Organised with the sole aim of increasing and developing the Tamil language and nurturing new-age Tamil writers, the competition has been a stepping stone for many young, talented writers to emerge in the spotlight.
The competition has consciously, for the past 37 years, been meticulously organised by passionate and dedicated students who are devoted to the cause of preserving and strengthening the growth of the Tamil language, culture, literature, and history. The late Professor R. Dhandayudham, who had been one of the most eminent scholars in the field of Malaysian Tamil studies, was the one to grant the name Peravai Kathaigal to this competition. It is important to note that in 2019, the 33 Peravai Kathaigal Competition was awarded the Malaysia Book of Records for having the most short stories published in one book.
The competition is divided into three categories: the general category, which is open to Malaysians of all ages; the student category, which is open to students from Form 4 to university students; and the international category, which is open to non-Malaysians of all ages.
The competition, as it has traditionally followed, is looking for short stories with interesting and unique thoughts. All submissions must be sent by October 16, 2023, to this link. For more information, participants can contact Logana Priya Sivakumar at 016-987-3412 or Thanesh Arumugam at 011-1650-6063.
