Breaking Barriers: Ilavarasan Tamil Chelvan Becomes The First Indian Student In 24 Years To Receive The Prestigious State Award At The University Of Malaya

In a historic moment, Ilavarasan Tamil Chelvan, a student at the University of Malaya‘s Department of South East Asian Studies, has been honored with the ANUGERAH PELAJARAN DIRAJA State Education Award. This accolade, reserved for individuals who demonstrate excellence not only in academics but also in extracurricular activities, service, and leadership, marks a significant milestone for Ilavarasan and the Indian student community.

Hailing from the Bukit Rokan residential area in Negeri Sembilan, Federal Land Development Board (FELDA), Ilavarasan is the proud son of supportive parents who worked as gardeners. Despite humble beginnings, they steadfastly supported his educational journey, a factor Ilavarasan acknowledges with gratitude. The recent recognition has not only brought honor to his family but has also made him the first Indian student to receive this distinguished State Education Award after 24 years.

Ilavarasan completed his bachelor’s degree in the field of arts and social sciences, specializing in the South East Asian Education Department. His achievements extend beyond the academic realm, showcasing excellence in extracurricular activities, university clubs, and the sports department. The criteria for the ANUGERAH PELAJARAN DIRAJA State Education Award are stringent, requiring a minimum overall GPA of 3.7 and exemplary leadership in various domains such as extracurricular activities, business knowledge, arts, volunteerism, and sports.

Students in general are very rarely aware of APD. Many still don’t know about it. As far as University Malaya is concerned, you need to have a minimum of 3.7 in the overall GPA and excel in all areas such as leadership in extracurricular activities, business knowledge, arts, volunteerism, sports.

Shared by Ilavarasan, shedding light on the lesser-known accolade. His elation at being chosen among more than 4000 students who vied for the award reflects the magnitude of this achievement.

Ilavarasan’s journey to this accolade was not without its challenges. Despite not securing the highest grades in the SPM examination, his perseverance shone through. His dedication and hard work were duly recognized when he was awarded the best student award int he STPM examination, laying the foundation for his dream of receiving the prestigious State Education Award.

The recognition of Ilavarasan Tamil Chelvan’s achievements goes beyond an individual accomplishment which it also serves as an inspiration for aspiring students, especially those facing obstacles in their educational pursuits. Ilavarasan’s story exemplifies how determination, resilience, and a passion for learning can pave the way for success, breaking down barriers and shattering preconceived notions.

As Ilavarasan continues to chart his path in academia, his journey stands a testament to the transformative power of education and the potential that lies within every student, regardless of their background.
