Rishan Ponraj, a graduate from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang, captivates our admiration. Despite facing the challenges of visual impairment, this remarkable individual exemplifies that there are no excuses when it comes to achieving success. Rishan’s story is a testament to the power of determination and resilience. In the face of adversity, he has not only pursued higher education but has successfully graduated from a prestigious institution like Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Hailing form Dengkil, Selangor, this 24-year-old individual has successfully earned a Bachelor of Arts(English). Rishan, born with cataracts and glaucoma, not only demonstrated academic excellence but also achieved the remarkable feat of securing the first position in a ‘Braille’ reading competition at the Northern Level during his academic journey.

Rishan recounted that he enrolled as a student at the university four years ago, amidst the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Undeterred by the challenging circumstances, he persevered in his academic pursuits by transitioning to online learning. This decision not only showcased his adaptability and commitment to education but also underscored the resilience needed to navigate the uncertainties brought about by the global health crisis.

In the last year, following the approval for cross-border activities with specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Rishan was finally able to partake in the on-campus learning experience and attend face-to-face lectures. This shift from remote to in-person learning marked a significant milestone in his academic experience, allowing him to actively engage with the campus environment and benefit from direct interaction in a traditional classroom setting.

“In the current era, learning for individuals with visual impairments has become more accessible with the availability of computers, laptops, or devices equipped with voice guidance tools. Additionally, applications that can read the text aloud in reading materials can be downloaded. However, a significant challenge arises when the reading material contains graphical content, as the existing applications may not interpret it. I am grateful to be surrounded by friends willing to assist by transcribing image descriptions to align with the capabilities of these applications. It is a memorable experience for me,” he shared Rishan to Harian Metro at the 61st USM Convocation Ceremony.

Rishan also encourages individuals facing similar challenges to take advantage of opportunities to learn or explore diverse fields based on their abilities.

“In the present time, numerous opportunities are available for individuals with disabilities, particularly for those aiming to pursue higher education. If you have a passion for learning, do not give up, and always seek solutions when facing challenges, as they will become the most valuable ‘lessons’ in life,” he emphasized.”

His accomplishments shatter preconceived notions and highlight the boundless potential that exists within each individual, regardless of physical limitations. Rishan serves as an inspiration to all, proving that with dedication and a strong will, one can overcome obstacles and carve out a path to success. Rishan’s journey not only showcases his personal triumph but also challenges societal stereotypes, fostering a more inclusive perspective on what can be achieved by individuals with diverse abilities.

In celebrating Rishan Ponraj’s achievements, we are reminded that the human spirit is indomitable and that, with the right mindset, anyone can transcend perceived limitations to reach their full potential. His story encourages us to reevaluate our own perspectives, fostering a society that recognizes and celebrates the talents and capabilities of every individual, irrespective of the challenges they may face.
