A book titled ‘Pasumai Ninaivil PLKN,’ authored by S. Krishnan and Ravichander, was launched at Sithar Kudil in Sitiawan on the 30th December 2023. National Service Training Programme is widely recognized as Pusat Latihan Khidmat Negara(PLKN).

The National Service Training Programme, managed by the National Service Training Department under the purview of the Minister of Defence (MINDEF), involves the selective drafting of 18-year-old youths. Commencing in December 2003, this three-month initiative was established to foster camaraderie among young individuals of specific age groups, transcending racial and ethnic boundaries. The program aimed to counteract the perceived growing isolation among Malaysia’s diverse multi-ethnic and multi-cultural communities. The PLKN programme was abolished in the year of 2018.

The authors have meticulously compiled comprehensive information, spanning from the inception of the PLKN program to its eventual abolition. Their work encapsulates the entire timeline of the program, providing a detailed account of its implementation, evolution, and the circumstances leading to its discontinuation. While similar programs are implemented in numerous countries this book comprises the origin of this PLKN service in our nation, its purpose, background, and about the comprehensive training provided to students over a three-month period.

The narrative within the book underscores the program’s fundamental objective—to instill a sense of patriotism and cultivate leadership qualities, particularly within the minds of the youth. It delves into the rationale behind the program’s creation, offering a nuanced exploration of how it was conceived to serve as a platform for fostering a strong sense of national pride and nurturing leadership skills among the younger generation.

Sungai Wangi Sri Thandayuthapani temple president, Kathiravan officiated the book launch meanwhile the first book was presented to Leela Letchumi Govindasamy, a social worker from Manjong district. Dr. Kingston Paul Tamburaj, a Senior Lecturer from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris(UPSI), was the one to introduce the book. During his analysis, he evaluated the book using the 10 elements specified by Nannul regarding the characteristics of a well-crafted book. Dr. Tamburaj commended the book, stating that it excels in all these elements, reflecting its exceptional quality of writing.
