Kaviperarasu Vairamuthu is a renowned and prolific Tamil poet, lyricist, and author hailing from Tamil Nadu, India. Vairamuthu has made significant contributions to Tamil literature and the Indian film industry. His poetic prowess is evident in the vast body of work he has produced, encompassing various themes such as love, spirituality, and social issues. He has an impressive literary repertoire that extends beyond his contributions to film lyrics. He has authored several acclaimed books, showcasing his versatility and depth as a writer.
Vairamuthu’s poetry often reflects a keen sensitivity to human emotions and experiences. His most recent literary endeavor, “Maha Kavithai,” was formally unveiled on January 1, 2024, by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin. The book launch event was marked by the attendance of eminent personalities, including esteemed dignitaries, accomplished poets, and enthusiastic devotees of the Tamil language.
A delegation comprising 12 members from the Malaysian Tamil Association has thoroughly reviewed and lauded poet Vairamuthu’s latest work, “Maha Kavithai.” In recognition of the exceptional literary merit demonstrated in the book, Vairamuthu is slated to receive the prestigious “Peruntamil” Award. This distinguished accolade is jointly conferred by the Malaysia Tamil Ilakkiya Kaapagam and the Tamil Peraayam. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in Malaysia, as announced by Datuk Sri M. Saravanan, Vice President of the MIC (Malaysian Indian Congress) and Member of Parliament for Tapah. During a ceremony held in Chennai, Datuk Sri M. Saravanan honored Vairamuthu on stage and extended the invitation of the forthcoming award ceremony.
On the stage, Vairamuthu emphasized the importance of timely recognition for deserving talents and their works. He articulated that waiting until individuals are advanced in age diminishes the significance of acknowledging their contributions. According to Vairamuthu, providing recognition and awards for exceptional literary works serves as fuel, motivating recipients to continue producing even better work. He underscored the value of appreciating and honoring accomplishments in a timely manner to encourage sustained creativity and excellence.
Malaysia is poised to confer an award on a book from India. However, it is noteworthy to inquire how many times India’s highest honor, the Jnanpith Award(Nyana Peedam) Award, has been bestowed upon the Tamil language. India’s foremost literary accolade, the Jnanpith Award, has been conferred 58 times to date. Notably, it has been awarded 11 times for Hindi, 8 times for Kannada, 6 times each for Malayalam and Bengali, and 5 times for Urdu. However, it is regrettable that the Jnanpith Award has been granted only twice to Tamil, the oldest language. The recipients of this recognition were authors Akhilan and Jayakanthan. Unfortunately, it has been 22 years since the award was last bestowed upon the Tamil language. I am bringing attention to this matter on this stage and earnestly requesting the concerned individuals to consider and address this issue.
The ceremony is scheduled to take place on March 8 at 6 p.m. at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur. The prestigious award will be conferred upon poet Vairamuthu in the distinguished presence of numerous scholars and leaders, including MIC President Tan Sri Vigneswaran. This event marks a significant recognition of Vairamuthu’s outstanding contributions to literature. Congratulations to Vairamuthu, and Malaysia takes immense pride in bestowing this honor upon him on its soil.
