India and Malaysia are poised to deepen their strategic bilateral cooperation, with a particular focus on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and cooperatives. High Commissioner of India to Malaysia, BN Reddy, conveyed this commitment during his recent visit to the office of Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Dato R. Ramanan.

Reddy emphasised India’s eagerness to strengthen ties with Malaysia and anticipates the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to India in the fourth quarter of 2024. This visit is seen as a pivotal moment to enhance the relationship between the two nations, particularly in the realm of bilateral strategic cooperation.

Acknowledging Malaysia’s robust economic foundation, Reddy credited it to economic reforms implemented under Anwar’s leadership. India aims to fortify this relationship by intensifying collaboration, particularly in economic sectors related to SMEs and cooperatives.

During the meeting, Ramanan and Reddy discussed the potential for collaboration between Malaysia and India in boosting the SME sector. Both parties expressed commitment and readiness to establish stronger ties, considering the growth potential within this crucial sector.

Ramanan proposed that the Indian government actively promote its SME sector in Malaysia. He also suggested strategic cooperation involving SMEs from both countries. To facilitate this comprehensive collaboration, Ramanan underscored the role of SME Corp Malaysia and the Cooperative Commission of Malaysia. These entities will play a crucial role in formulating and implementing plans to advance SMEs in both nations.

The emphasis on SME cooperation is expected to create opportunities for the exchange of technology, knowledge, and experiences between entrepreneurs in India and Malaysia. This collaborative effort signifies the commitment of both nations to strengthen their economic ties.

The outcomes of this meeting hold the promise of new opportunities that will directly benefit SMEs in both Malaysia and India. The discussions reflect a mutual dedication to fostering economic collaboration and establishing a solid foundation for a stronger partnership. As the two nations work towards building a more robust relationship, the cooperative efforts in SME development are expected to yield positive outcomes that will contribute to the growth and prosperity of both economies.
