Introducing the Intervention Curriculum Initiative with Emphasis on Literacy and Numeracy for Year 1 Students

The Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced that the Ministry of Education (MOE) has developed an intervention curriculum tailored for Standard 1 students, aimed at preparing them for the upcoming 2027 School Curriculum. This curriculum places a strong emphasis on fostering proficiency in literacy, numeracy, and character development. It draws from the KSSR (2017 Review) Edition 3 curriculum framework, integrating early screening measures for literacy and numeracy, providing transparent reporting of classroom assessment outcomes to parents, and ensuring effective dissemination of the KSSR (2017 Review) Edition 3 curriculum materials.

During the initial three months of the academic year, teachers will conduct screenings to assess the proficiency levels of each Year 1 student. Following this assessment period, students who demonstrate weaknesses in literacy, numeracy, and character development will be temporarily withdrawn from their regular classes. Instead, they will participate in this specialized program for an additional three-month period.

The objective is to identify students who have not yet attained proficiency in reading, writing, and arithmetic, thereby necessitating targeted early intervention suited to their individual abilities, capacities, and preferred learning modalities.

“The ministry will start with updating and restructuring the content of science and mathematics subjects at Level 1 as stated in the KSSR (2017 Review) Edition 3 curriculum document. We will also be implementing early literacy and numeracy screening for Year 1 students to identify those in need of early intervention, reporting classroom assessment results to parents to explain the necessary interventions for each student,” she told reporters during a special press conference.

She also mentioned that the ministry is committed to ensuring the efficient dissemination of the KSSR (2017 Review) Edition 3 curriculum materials to all primary school Science and Mathematics teachers. This will be achieved through organized workshops and training sessions designed to equip educators with the necessary resources and knowledge to effectively implement the curriculum. She emphasized that these initiatives are aimed at aligning the current curriculum with the requirements of students, allowing room for teachers, parents, and students to better navigate subjects such as mathematics, science, Malay, and English.

By emphasizing proficiency in literacy, numeracy, and character development, students are equipped with essential skills that form the foundation for future learning and success. The early screening measures ensure that students receive timely interventions tailored to their individual needs, fostering a supportive learning environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
