Singapore’s Mathi Alagan Stars in Dev Patel’s Hollywood Film

Singaporean-Tamil actor Mathi Alagan recently starred in Dev Patel’s directorial debut, ‘Monkey Man.’ The talented actor expressed his immense gratitude for gaining the opportunity to work on this international film. The film, inspired by the legend of Hanuman and set in Mumbai, features Dev Patel in the lead role, seeking vengeance for a past injustice.

Known for his roles in Singaporean television dramas like Suriavelan’s ‘Naam’ and ‘Avatharam,’ Mathi Alagan plays an arms dealer in the Hollywood action thriller. Sharing his experience on Instagram, the 59-year-old actor described working with Dev Patel as an honour and a masterclass in itself. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and praised Dev and his team for their vision, dedication, and passion for storytelling.

Released in Singapore theatres on April 5, 2024, “Monkey Man” marks not only Dev Patel’s directorial debut but also Mathi’s Hollywood debut. In the film, Mathi’s character interacts with Patel’s protagonist, selling various firearms, in a scene that lasts several minutes.

Mathi’s acting journey extends far beyond his memorable role in “Monkey Man.” From his notable appearances in Singaporean Tamil dramas to his impactful role in the 2018 Malaysian Tamil film “Villavan: The Vigilante,” he has showcased remarkable versatility and range as an actor. In addition to acting, he is also an experienced director and writer. One of his recent projects as a director and screenwriter has been for Astro’s Kaathal Maathiri series.

Throughout his career, he has had the privilege of collaborating with esteemed figures in the industry, such as Kollywood icons Ajith and Stayaraj. Mathi made his debut in the Kollywood industry with a significant role in the Ajith film “Poovellam Un Vaasam,” marking the beginning of a promising career trajectory. His contributions to Kollywood films like “Penguin” and “Kanchana 2” further solidify his place as a talented actor with a diverse range of roles. His work on “Peguin” is particularly noteworthy because it earned him the 14th Edison Awards in Chennai for Best Character Artiste Overseas.
