Empowering Education: AI Workshop Inspires Teachers and Students at SJKT Ladang Midlands

In today’s digital age, fostering an understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) among school students is paramount. With AI permeating various aspects of our daily lives, from voice assistants to recommendation systems, possessing knowledge of AI equips students with the tools to navigate and thrive in an increasingly technologically-driven world. Understanding AI not only promotes digital literacy but also cultivates critical thinking skills, enabling students to evaluate the ethical implications and societal impact of AI applications. Moreover, proficiency in AI concepts empowers students to harness the potential of emerging technologies, preparing them for future career opportunities in fields such as data science, robotics, and automation. Thus, integrating AI education into school curricula is essential for empowering the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.

In that case, there was an Artificial Intelligence workshop titled “Programme AI Midlands 2024” was organised at SJKT Ladang Midlands on the 17th April 2024. This workshop was conducted by trainers from “Be STEM ready” organisation. Be STEM Ready emerged as a proponent of STEM education in 2012, inspired by President Obama’s “Educate to Innovate” initiative launched in 2009 at the White House, USA. With a mission to foster excellence in STEM education, Be STEM Ready endeavors to build a cohesive STEM ecosystem by fostering connections between academia and industry. Through a range of programs, Be STEM Ready aims to bolster STEM competencies nationwide, focusing on training Internationally Certified STEM trainers using its Be STEM Ready Curriculums. This initiative aims to equip the future generation with practical STEM skills, preparing them for life’s challenges and opportunities through comprehensive STEM education that sparks innovation and promotes life readiness.

The trainers from Be STEM Ready successfully conducted the workshop for both students and teachers at SJKT Ladang Midlands, ensuring an enriching experience for all participants. Through interactive sessions and hands-on activities, the workshop provided valuable insights into STEM concepts and methodologies. Students gained practical knowledge and skills applicable to real-world scenarios, while teachers received valuable training to enhance their STEM pedagogy.

Ninety students and fifteen teachers participated in the workshop facilitated by Be STEM Ready. Spanning over five engaging hours, the workshop offered a plethora of valuable and informative sessions. Attendees were immersed in enlightening discussions and hands-on activities focused on coding, robotics, and drone technology. Moreover, the workshop shed light on the significance of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impending role in the future landscape. Participants gained insights into the necessity of adapting to digital technology and leveraging AI in education. Through thought-provoking discussions and practical demonstrations, the workshop underscored the importance of equipping both students and educators with the requisite skills to thrive in an increasingly digitalized world.

Mr. Govindasamy Subramani, the headmaster of the school, expressed his appreciation for the enlightening workshop, highlighting its informative nature. He affirmed that this inaugural initiative served as a catalyst for future endeavors, inspiring the school to make necessary preparations to integrate continuous AI lesson classes into the curriculum. He emphasized that students who participated in the workshop would be encouraged to showcase their acquired knowledge and talents at upcoming events such as the Science Fair and mathematics-based competitions. This strategic approach aims to provide students with practical opportunities to apply their newfound skills and excel in various academic arenas.

As schools like SJKT Ladang Midlands continue to embrace AI education, they empower the next generation to navigate and excel in an increasingly digitalized world, paving the way for innovation, problem-solving, and lifelong learning.
