His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, welcomed the Singapore High Commissioner to Malaysia, Vanu Gopala Menon, at the illustrious Istana Negara, marking another significant step in continuing bilateral relations between Malaysia and its neighbour, Singapore.

Singapore stands as a crucial partner for Malaysia, not only in diplomatic exchanges but also in economic collaboration. Notably, it ranks among the major sources of foreign direct investment (FDI) for Malaysia, contributing significantly to the nation’s economic growth. Last year, Singapore’s FDI constituted 8.3 percent of the total FDI registered by Malaysia, highlighting the depth of economic interdependence between the two countries.
Trade relations between Malaysia and Singapore have also witnessed remarkable growth, with Singapore emerging as Malaysia’s second-largest trading partner after China. Trade volumes between the two nations surged to RM181.3 billion in the first half of 2023, marking a substantial 6.1 per cent increase compared to the previous year. Such robust trade ties underscore the synergies and complementarities that exist between the economies of Malaysia and Singapore.
In January of last year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his Singaporean counterpart, Lee Hsien Loong, observed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding the planned Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). This initiative, aimed at fostering economic development and prosperity in the region, exemplified the shared economic vision of the two nations.
