Renowned music composer Ilaiyaraaja has issued a copyright notice to the creators of the forthcoming movie “Coolie,” helmed by director Lokesh Kanagaraj and starring Rajinikanth. The notice pertains to the unauthorized utilization of his musical compositions in the film’s promotional video, which has prompted legal action from the composer due to the absence of his prior approval.
Lokesh Kanagaraj’s upcoming directorial venture will star Rajinikanth in the lead role, titled “Coolie.” Produced by Kalanithi Maaran under the esteemed Sun Pictures banner, the film recently unveiled a promotional video showcasing the title, crafted by composer Anirudh. The promo featured a recreated rendition of the renowned track “Va Va Pakkam Va” composed by Ilaiyaraaja from the 1983 film “Thanga Magan,” in which Rajinikanth also portrayed the protagonist. Hence, Ilaiyaraaja has sent the legal notice to the makers for using his song without his permission.
According to reports, the notice highlighted the absence of formal authorization from Ilaiyaraaja, the rightful owner of the song and music used in the teaser, “Va Va Pakkam Va.” This failure to secure permission has been cited as a violation of the Copyright Act of 1957.
The complaint specifically targets director Lokesh Kanagaraj, alleging a pattern of unauthorized use of music in his projects. Previously, Lokesh failed to obtain permission for the song “Vikram Vikram,” featured in the movie “Vikram.” Similarly, accusations have been made regarding the reproduction of the music from the song “En Jodi Manja Kuruvi” in Lokesh’s production venture “Fight Club,” also without proper authorization.
Ilaiyaraaja has requested the makers of “Coolie” to either obtain proper authorization for the use of the “Va Va Pakkam Va” song showcased in the title teaser or to remove the music from the teaser altogether. His notice also warned that legal action may be pursued if these measures are not taken.
