AirAsia’s latest venture into India’s vibrant travel market marks a significant milestone on May 3, 2024, linking Ahmedabad, India’s inaugural UNESCO World Heritage City, to Kuala Lumpur, the bustling capital of Malaysia. The commencement of this new route emphasises AirAsia’s commitment to bolstering air connectivity within the region while offering affordable travel options to passengers.
With four weekly flights, this service opens up a gateway for travellers to seamlessly immerse themselves in the cultural richness of Ahmedabad and the dynamic urban landscape of Kuala Lumpur. The inaugural flight, AK90, witnessed a full house, reflecting the enthusiasm and anticipation among passengers for this new connection. Notably, the event was graced by dignitaries from both AirAsia and Tourism Malaysia, emphasising the strategic significance of this route.
Tourism Malaysia’s Deputy Director for the South Asia Unit, Solehuddin Ahmad, lauded AirAsia’s efforts in expanding air links between India and Malaysia, highlighting the mutual benefits for travellers and the tourism industry. He underscored the importance of affordability in enhancing travel accessibility, particularly in light of recent policy changes facilitating visa-free entry for Indian nationals into Malaysia.
Paul Carroll, AirAsia’s Group Chief Commercial Officer, expressed excitement over the airline’s growing presence in India, recognising the country as a pivotal market for expansion. He emphasised AirAsia’s commitment to not only facilitating travel to Malaysia but also enabling seamless onward connections to other destinations through its fly-through options.
AirAsia’s extensive network now comprises 15 direct routes from India to Malaysia, serviced by both its short-haul and medium-haul affiliates. This comprehensive coverage ensures that travellers from various Indian cities can easily access Malaysia and beyond, with over 130 destinations within AirAsia’s extensive low-cost network across Asia.
AirAsia’s robust network now connects India and Malaysia through 15 international routes, offering 78 weekly flights via its short-haul branch, AirAsia Malaysia (flight code AK). Departing from cities like Trivandrum, Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Kochi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Visakhapatnam, and soon Bhubaneswar (starting May 28, 2024), as well as Kozhikode and Guwahati (beginning August 1, 2024), AirAsia ensures frequent travel options. Moreover, its medium-haul affiliate, AirAsia X Malaysia (flight code D7), operates direct routes from New Delhi and Amritsar to Kuala Lumpur, with 8 weekly flights.
