For the first time ever, the Indian Activity Executive Committee (IAEC) of Hillview Community Club (CC) has expanded its repertoire of cultural programs to include a Tamil debate, marking a significant step towards promoting and nurturing the Tamil language. Traditionally known for organizing festivities during cultural events like Deepavali and Pongal, the IAEC has broadened its scope to embrace intellectual discourse and language advocacy. The inaugural Tamil debate took place at the Hillview Community Forum on April 27th, showcasing the commitment of the community to celebrate linguistic diversity and encourage linguistic proficiency among its members.
The Advisor of the Indian Activity Executive Committee (IAEC), Pramila, expressed her delight at the successful organization of the informative forum. She emphasized the significance of such activities in promoting Tamil speech, asserting that they contribute to keeping the language vibrant and relevant.
The title of the debate, “What brings happiness and peace to human life?”, delves into a fundamental aspect of human existence, particularly pertinent in today’s increasingly complex and fast-paced world. One team explored the notion that “sufficient money” is the key to happiness and peace, highlighting the material comforts and security it can provide in an age where financial stability is often equated with overall well-being. Conversely, the opposing team argued that “an understanding heart” holds the true key to happiness and peace, emphasizing the importance of empathy, compassion, and meaningful connections in fostering genuine contentment and emotional fulfillment amidst the challenges of modern life. This topic not only addresses universal human desires but also prompts reflection on the values and priorities that ultimately contribute to a fulfilling and harmonious existence.
The team debating the significance of “Sufficient money?” comprised Mr. Tamilavel, Madam Sumathi, Mr. Murugayan, and Mr. Manikandan. On the opposing side, the team advocating for the importance of “Understanding heart” included Mr. Brahmakumar, Madam Perumal Amali, Mr. Thiagarajan, and Madam Thilagarani Rajalingam. Ultimately, the second team was declared the winner of the competition. Poet Dr. Ganapathy Subramanian, renowned for receiving awards such as ‘Tamilmamani’ and ‘Thirukural Valarchemmal’, served as a panel judge for the event.
Highlighting the event, Richard Lim, Co-Chairman of the Hillview Community Council Club Committee, shared that despite not being fluent in Tamil, he is immersed in Tamil culture. He mentioned experiencing aspects like enjoying Indian “Rojak” and participating in Ganesha worship at home. Indian Activity Executive Committee Chairman, Gunasekaran, expressed gratitude to advisor Pramila, acknowledging the benefits of such programs. He emphasized their potential to inspire future student participation.
He remarked that although Tamil is the primary spoken language in Tamil Nadu, there’s a notable infusion of English words. However, he expressed satisfaction in witnessing Singaporean Tamils maintaining the purity of the Tamil language in their speech. This commitment to preserving the integrity of the language reflects a deep cultural pride and dedication to linguistic heritage within the Singaporean Tamil community.
Approximately 250 individuals attended the event in person, while the YouTube live stream garnered an impressive audience of over 1,000 viewers. Among them, S. Vijayarajan expressed his enjoyment of watching the show live from Chennai, highlighting the widespread interest and engagement generated by the event, both locally and internationally. The inaugural Tamil debate organized by the Indian Activity Executive Committee (IAEC) of Hillview Community Club marks a significant milestone in promoting linguistic diversity and intellectual discourse within the community.
