In a significant move to promote literacy and education, book banks are being established in public libraries across selected Malaysian states. These initiatives aim to gather reading materials for distribution to Tamil National Type Schools (SJKT) nationwide, as announced by Deputy Unity Minister Saraswathy Kandasami.
Starting today, the book banks will accept donations of reading materials in various languages said Saraswathy. This effort encourages the public to contribute books that are still usable and suitable for SJKT students. The book banks will remain operational until August 31 in several states, including Perlis, Penang, Kedah, Perak, Selangor, Melaka, Johor, and Kuala Lumpur, facilitating public donations at these locations.
Speaking at the book donation ceremony for Tamil National Type Schools and the launch of the “Dariku Untukmu” Book Bank programme, Saraswathy emphasized the collaborative efforts between the National Library (PNM), the Unity Ministry, and the Malaysian Tamil Literary Association. This program aims to enhance reading material collections and foster a love for reading among the younger generation.
Each donated book will undergo careful screening to ensure its appropriateness for SJKT students. The initiative has already received 100 books from PNM and an additional 14 from the Malaysian Tamil Literary Association.
Highlighting the benefits of reading, Saraswathy noted its role in enhancing mental acuity and broadening knowledge. She affirmed that PNM will continue to promote reading activities across all segments of society, aligning with the Malaysia MADANI vision championed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
This initiative marks a pivotal step in nurturing a culture of reading, aiming to inspire and educate future generations.
