In a groundbreaking achievement, Manika Batra has become the first Indian table tennis player to reach the singles pre-quarterfinals at the Olympic Games. This historic feat was achieved with a commanding 4-0 victory over world number 18, France favorite Prithika Pavade . Manika’s remarkable performance not only marks a personal milestone but also signifies a significant moment for Indian table tennis on the global stage.

A Historic Victory

Manika Batra, ranked 28th in the world, showcased her dominance from the start, defeating the 19-year-old French favorite Prithika Pavade with scores of 11-9, 11-6, 11-9, and 11-7. This victory is particularly notable as it represents a significant improvement from her previous Olympic appearance in Tokyo, where she reached the round of 32.

“I am happy that I beat a French player in Paris. I defeated a higher-ranked player. I did not think of creating history and making the pre-quarters; there are more rounds. I will take it match by match and give my best as I always do.” Manika told after her match

Strategic Brilliance

Manika’s victory was not just a result of her technical prowess but also her strategic insight. Initially planning to attack Prithika’s forehand, she quickly adapted her strategy when she found more success targeting Prthika’s backhand. This tactical flexibility proved crucial in her win.

“I had planned to play to her forehand as discussed with my coach but I was getting the points on her backhand, so I did not change the tactics. I did play a few shots on her forehand too; I did not want her to think that I am playing only on her backhand,” she explained.

Looking Ahead

Manika Batra’s focus remains steadfast as she prepares for her next match against either Hong Kong China’s Zhu Chengzhu or eighth-seeded Japanese player Miu Hirano. Despite the historic milestone, Manika emphasizes her commitment to taking each match as it comes and giving her best effort.

“I’m not focusing on that (reaching Round 16 for the first time). My focus is to play every match with my best effort and enjoy the Olympics and yes, I’m really happy that I reached round of 16 and blessed. So I just give my best for every round I play against whoever I play,” said Manika

As Manika continues her quest for Olympic glory, her achievements inspire hope and pride for Indian sports enthusiasts around the world.
