In an electrifying display of skill and determination, Malaysia’s national women’s doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah have stormed into the quarter-finals of the Paris Olympics 2024 badminton competition. The dynamic duo clinched a straight-sets victory over Indonesia’s badminton pair, Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti, in their final group match at the Porte De La Chapelle Arena in Paris.

Ranked 13th in the world, Pearly and Thinaah showcased their prowess with a commanding 21-18, 21-9 win, securing their place in the quarter-finals in just 45 minutes. This triumph marks their second win in the tournament, following a grueling 18-21, 21-15, 21-16 victory over Japan’s former two-time world champions Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara on Sunday.

A Match to Remember

The Malaysian pair’s victory over Apriyani and Siti Fadia was their fourth win in seven meetings, highlighting their growing dominance on the court. Their journey to the quarter-finals has been nothing short of spectacular, especially considering their narrow loss to China’s world number one pair, Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan, in the opening match of Group A. Despite the 17-21, 20-22 defeat, Pearly and Thinaah bounced back with determination, ultimately securing their spot in the last eight.

Making History for Malaysia

Pearly and Thinaah’s achievement is a significant milestone for Malaysian badminton, as they become only the second women’s doubles pair from Malaysia to enter the quarter-finals of the Olympics. The first pair to do so was Woon Khe Wei and Vivian Hoo at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro edition. Their success in Paris adds to Malaysia’s proud history in the sport and brings hope for a potential podium finish.
