Pongal is one of South India’s most important festivals, and it is more about the act of giving than a ceremony. Pongal is, in a nutshell, a festival of generosity. It’s a way of showing appreciation to the entire creation because it’s the force that keeps life going.
The Pongal celebration takes place in mid-January and lasts for the first four days of the Thai month (Tamil month). Tamil Indians regard this Thai month to be the luckiest month of the year.
Pongal falls on the 14th of January this year. Everyone has been buying clay pots, sugar canes, and Indian delicacies in preparation for the auspicious occasion.
Pongal marks the start of the Tamil New Year, hence newly harvested grains are prepared for the first time on that day.
Every family celebrates with festivals and ancient traditions, and everything appears to be extremely distinct. The less fortunate are fed and given clothes. Mattu Pongal is a festival in which the cow is honoured the next day and birds and animals are fed.
The Sun is venerated on this auspicious day as the embodiment and source of Life-Force, without which human existence would be impossible. Payasam, a traditional South Indian dish, is presented to the sun in exchange for his blessings and then eaten as Prasad.
The third day is dedicated to family worship, which includes, of course, more payasam offerings and, more significantly, the gathering of family members. This day has the potential to be a tremendously healing one, restoring deep connections with the Universe, Mother Nature, and one another.
The Creation is acknowledged as a magnificent heavenly blessing during this holiday, and it is.
