MIC Deputy President, Datuk Seri M. Saravanan has said that the Thaipusam Day procession, including the kavadi and chariot procession might go as initially planned giving the impression that the celebration is expected to get the permission of Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

M. Saravanan, who is also the Minister of Human Resources, said this following a meeting with Ismail Sabri last Friday, who was basically positive about the chariot procession, reported by Utusan.

He said a meeting would be held on Tuesday to discuss matters related to the celebration of the festival.

All celebratory processions, including the kavadi procession for Thaipusam and Chingay in connection with the Chinese New Year, were prohibited on 7th December, according to Minister of Unity Datuk Seri Halimah Mohamed Sadique in the Dewan Rakyat, since the country is now facing the Omicron threat.

“Datuk Seri Halimah had a meeting with representatives of Hindu religious leaders and temples after the cabinet meeting. Various matters have been discussed,” he told reporters.

However, after receiving criticism from various quarters, the Ministry of Unity issued a statement stating that the COVID-19 SOPs for the upcoming Thaipusam celebration has not been finalised.

Thaipusam is expected to fall on 18th January, 2022 however, devotees start prepping for the religious ceremony 3-months in advance to fulfil their vows to Lord Murugan.
