Blood is an essential building element of human life. Millions of people worldwide today rely on donated blood to remain alive. Yet each year, the amount of blood donated falls well short of what is currently needed.

As the supply of the National Blood Bank has declined by 33 percent since the beginning of the conditional movement control order (CMCO), the government is pleading for donors to come forward and help replenish stockpile of vital fluids.

If you’re a first time donor and you’re not sure where to donate blood, fret not because the National Blood Bank has a very detailed guide on how and where to donate blood on its official website.

Many people tend to donate blood when they’re fit, but before heading to the next blood donation centre drive, do check your eligibility criteria.

When you’re a first-time donor, your age range should be from 18 till 60. The age limit is 65, if you’ve volunteered before. With parental consent, 17-year-olds can even donate.

  • Your weight must be 45 kilograms and above.
  • You’re not under long-term medication.
  • You shouldn’t be fasting.
  • You’ve had at least five hours of sleep, the night before.
  • In the past 24 hours, your body system must be alcohol free and also clean from any form of medication.
  • In the last six months, you have not menstruated, been pregnant or suffered any miscarriages.

Apart from that, donating blood is partially important for our health, helping one enhance their cardiovascular health, burn calories and of course, help save an endangered life.

For those who wish to donate blood during the CMCO period, you can do so at the following blood donation centres:
