Malaysia’s hopes for a historic Olympic bronze medal in the women’s badminton doubles event were dashed as Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah were defeated by Japan’s Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida. The Japanese pair won in straight games, 21-11, 21-11, at the Porte de la Chapelle Arena.

Despite the loss, Pearly and Thinaah made history by becoming the first Malaysian women’s doubles pair to reach an Olympic semi-final. Their remarkable campaign saw them navigating through the “group of death” and being the only team to take a game off the top-seeded Chinese pair, Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan.

In the bronze medal match, the Japanese duo quickly established dominance, taking a 7-3 lead in the first game and extending it to 11-4 at the interval. Pearly and Thinaah managed to win the next three points but could not sustain the momentum as Matsuyama and Shida pulled away to a commanding 16-8 lead before closing the game at 21-11.

The second game followed a similar pattern, with the Japanese pair taking an early 8-3 lead and maintaining their advantage at 11-6. Although the Malaysians fought hard, they couldn’t bridge the gap,  Matsuyama and Shida secured the game 21-11, sealing their victory and clinching the bronze medal.

In the semi-final, Pearly and Thinaah put up a tough fight against the world No. 1 Chinese pair. They lost the match 12-21, 21-18, 15-21, in what was their second defeat to Chen and Jia at the Paris Olympics, having previously fallen to them in the group stage opener.

Their spirited performance throughout the tournament garnered praise from Malaysian Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, who hailed their excellence and determination. While the bronze medal match did not end in their favor, Pearly and Thinaah’s historic run has undoubtedly inspired future generations of Malaysian badminton players. As Malaysians we’re proud of the duo for their tough fight.

With Pearly-Thinaah out of the medal contention, Malaysia’s hopes now rest on Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Lee Zii Jia. Aaron and Wooi Yik will contest for the men’s doubles bronze, while Lee Zii Jia will be in action in the men’s singles semi-finals, both aiming to bring home medals for Malaysia.
