Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain announced that the police are strengthening monitoring and control efforts at 151 General Operations Force (GOF) posts nationwide. This move is part of a broader strategy to curb the potential spread of the monkeypox (mpox) outbreak. The intensified measures reflect the police force’s commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that the virus does not gain a foothold in the country.
He stated that enhanced security measures will also be enforced at major entry points, including Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminals 1 and 2, the Sultan Iskandar Building, and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex in Johor.
“Our main concern now is the ‘rat routes’ used by individuals infected with the mpox virus to enter the country. This is why it’s crucial for us to strengthen control at the GOF posts,” he said during a press conference following the launch of the Kampung Angkat MADANI program in Kampung Jenal, Dabong, yesterday.
He was addressing a question regarding the GOF’s involvement in efforts to prevent the spread of the virus at the Malaysia-Thailand border. Razarudin also urged GOF personnel to closely monitor the movement of subsidized goods leaving the country to prevent losses caused by subsidies being used by non-citizens.
The World Health Organization has once again declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern, marking the second time in two years. This decision comes in response to a new outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has now spread to neighboring countries. The situation has raised global alarm due to the virus’s rapid transmission across borders, prompting international health authorities to take urgent measures to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.
