With the aim of highlighting the greatness and significance of the Thirukkural to the current generation, the Persatuan Kebajikan dan Pembangunan Pendidikan (Perak Welfare and Educational Development Association) Perak successfully organized a competition titled “Ilam Thalaimurai Pesum Valluvam.”
In this competition, participants were challenged to read the Thirukkural and interpret its meaning within just 30 seconds. A remarkable total of 800 students from 86 Tamil schools across the Perak state took part in this event, showcasing their knowledge and appreciation of this ancient text. The competition has been officially recognized in the Malaysian Book of Records for achieving the title of “Most Student Participation in a ThirIlam Thalaimurai Pesum Valluvamukkural Program.”
This recognition not only highlights the enthusiasm of the students but also underscores the importance of the Thirukkural in promoting cultural heritage and values among the younger generation. This competition took place at the Ulu Kinta IPG Campus in Perak on September 28th, from 7.30am to 4pm.
Many countries around the world are recognizing the greatness of the Thirukkural and translating it into various languages to make its wisdom accessible to a global audience. However, this practice has been declining among our students, leading to a significant reduction in their reading habits.
In light of these challenges, Manivannan Kandasamy, the secretary of the Perak Welfare and Educational Development Association, emphasized the importance of reviving interest in the Thirukkural among the youth. He announced that, for the first time, they have taken the initiative to organize a competition aimed at engaging students with this timeless literary work. This event has been made possible with the support of the Perak State Tamil School Headmasters’ Association, highlighting a collaborative effort to promote the Thirukkural and foster a love for reading among students.
The Menteri Besar of Perak, Dato Seri Saarani Mohamad, has generously provided a fund of RM20,000 for this competition, demonstrating strong support for educational initiatives that promote cultural heritage. This event attracted a diverse audience, with around 1,000 participants, including students, teachers, and parents, all coming together to celebrate the rich literary tradition of the Thirukkural.
The enthusiasm and participation from the community underscore the significance of this initiative by the Perak Welfare and Educational Development Association and the Perak State Tamil School Headmasters’ Association. By organizing this competition, they are not only fostering a deeper understanding of the Thirukkural among students but also encouraging family involvement and community engagement in the educational process.
Such initiatives play a crucial role in reviving interest in our cultural heritage, reinforcing the importance of reading and literature in the lives of young people. As the competition unfolds, it is hoped that it will inspire a new generation to appreciate the teachings of the Thirukkural, encouraging them to explore its wisdom further. Ultimately, this competition is a significant step toward cultivating a vibrant reading culture and preserving the invaluable legacy of the Thirukkural for future generations.
