Small Education Grants Awards for B40 in Conjunction with Miss MalaysiaIndian Global 2024 Grand Finals
The evening commenced with the distribution of MMICARE Association’s Small Education Grants, presented by the Chief Guest, YABhg Datin Seri Masdiana Muhamad. She is the President of PEKAWANIS Selangor and the wife of the Honourable Menteri Besar of Selangor, Datuk Seri Haji Amirudin Shari. These grants were awarded to deserving B40 students from Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, and Johor who are pursuing higher education.
Unlike previous years, the 2024 Small Grants program aims to supplement students’ meals. The 13 beneficiaries are all recipients of PTPN loans.
Unfortunately, after covering tuition and hostel fees, many students find they have inadequate funds remaining for nutritious meals during their studies. The grants will provide each student with RM3,000, which amounts to RM300 per month, sufficient for a quality meal on campus each day. Since 2008, MMICARE has been committed to assisting students through its Small Education Grants, aiming to meet the urgent needs of those from B40 backgrounds.
Many of these students lack reliable financial assistance from their families and frequently face difficult situations. In some cases, they even send money back home to help support their families.
“We have long since recognized the challenges faced by financially poor students in STEM courses. Our Small Grant programme was a result of inputs from various sympathetic public university lecturers. We have been giving out no obligation small grants to girls in STEM programmes since 2008. These grants can be used to pay any expenses they incur in the course of their studies. This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to empowering individuals through education and personal empowerment,” said Dr Lavanya Sivaji the president of MMICARE and former participant of the annual Miss MalaysiaIndian Global pageant.
After the awards ceremony, the grand final featured the 14 finalists, who had spent months participating in workshops focused on personal and professional empowerment. They demonstrated their development, confidence, and grace during the showcase.
