Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, has proposed that higher education institutions grant students early leave in anticipation of the upcoming Deepavali celebrations on 31st October. He emphasized the significance of this festival, as it is a tradition for many to return to their hometowns to celebrate with family and loved ones. Allowing students extra time to travel would ensure they can partake in the festivities without the added stress of academic commitments.

The issue of granting holidays to students in government universities has sparked considerable debate. A key point of concern is that students in universities are having classes until the morning of October 29, just two days before Deepavali, which falls on October 31. Many are questioning how they will manage to travel to their hometowns in such a short time frame, especially given the high demand for transportation during the festive season.

The tight scheduling leaves students with limited time to prepare for the celebrations or spend time with their families. This has led to growing calls for authorities to reconsider the academic calendar and provide students with early leave, ensuring they have enough time to journey home and partake fully in this important cultural celebration.

Students should be given sufficient time to travel home safely, and leave should be granted in advance to facilitate this. The Ministry of Higher Education should ensure this is implemented. Datuk Seri Ramanan stated that the issue will be brought to the attention of the Minister of Higher Education. He also expressed confidence that appropriate measures will be taken, as the matter has already been discussed.
