Kandha Shasti is an important Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Murugan, the god of war and the embodiment of bravery and virtue. Celebrated predominantly in Tamil Nadu and by Tamil communities around the world, this six-day festival holds deep religious significance, honoring the victory of good over evil.

The Significance of Kandha Shasti

Kandha Shasti commemorates the legendary battle between Lord Murugan and the powerful demon Surapadman. According to Hindu mythology, Surapadman, an asura (demon), terrorized the heavens and the earth, causing distress among both gods and humans. The supreme deity, Lord Shiva, created Lord Murugan to restore peace and righteousness. The festival marks Murugan’s triumph, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and the eradication of negative forces through divine intervention.

Kandha Shasti is observed during the Tamil month of Aippasi (October-November), starting on the sixth day after the new moon. Devotees undertake various religious practices that include fasting, prayers, and visiting Murugan temples. The fast, known as Shasti Vratham, is observed with great discipline and devotion. Some devotees opt for complete fasting, while others may follow a diet of fruits and simple vegetarian meals.

This year, Kandha Shasti began on November 2nd and continues until today, November 7th, culminating in the grand Soora Samharam, the climax of the six-day observance. Each day of Kandha Shasti is marked by special prayers, chanting of hymns, and spiritual songs known as Kandha Shasti Kavasam. This song is believed to have protective and healing powers, offering devotees a sense of solace and strength.

Many devotees visit Murugan temples during Kandha Shasti, where special prayers and rituals are conducted daily. Each day of the festival is marked by unique offerings, chants, and devotional practices, drawing worshippers together in a shared expression of faith and reverence for Lord Murugan.

The Sixth Day: Soora Samharam

The culmination of the festival occurs today, November 7th, with the grand event of Soora Samharam, which reenacts the fierce battle between Lord Murugan and Surapadman. This event dramatizes the moment of Murugan’s victory over the demon, symbolizing the ultimate conquest of dharma (righteousness) over adharma (unrighteousness). Priests and temple authorities enact this pivotal scene with elaborate rituals.

Thirukalyanam

The day following Soora Samharam is known as Thirukalyanam, which celebrates the divine wedding of Lord Murugan to Goddess Deivanai. This event symbolizes prosperity, harmony, and the fulfillment of Murugan’s victory over evil. The Thirukalyanam ritual is performed in many temples, depicting the sacred union with elaborate ceremonies, chants, and festive decorations. This joyous occasion brings devotees together in celebration, emphasizing themes of divine love, victory, and the blessings that follow the triumph of good over evil.
