Teacher Kalaichelvi Jayamohan, a dedicated remedial teacher from SJKT Jalan Fletcher with 17 years of teaching experience, has earned a remarkable achievement by being named one of the top 5 finalists for the prestigious Malaysia Teacher Prize 2024. Specializing in Bahasa Melayu and Mathematics, Kalaichelvi has made significant contributions in supporting students who need additional help, demonstrating exceptional dedication and innovative teaching methods.

What makes her achievement even more notable is that she was the only Indian among the 10 teachers selected in the initial stage of the Malaysia Teacher Prize 2024. Her selection as one of the top 5 finalists reflects her outstanding abilities as a remedial teacher, her passion for education, and her tireless efforts to empower her students. This recognition is not only a personal accomplishment but also a moment of immense pride for the Malaysian Indian community, as Kalaichelvi’s success highlights the significant contributions of Indian educators to the nation’s educational landscape.

Teacher Kalaichelvi is deeply committed to ensuring that no student under her care is left behind. She meticulously designs a clear and structured plan that helps her students progress from being unable to read and write to successfully rejoining their peers within the same academic year. Even after her students have graduated from her remedial classes, Kalaichelvi continues to monitor their progress during her free periods, offering ongoing support in the classroom. She also assists other teachers to ensure these students can keep up with the learning pace, demonstrating her unwavering dedication to their academic success.

Beyond her classroom responsibilities, Teacher Kalaichelvi goes the extra mile by collaborating with external organizations to provide her students with essential resources such as stationery and breakfast, ensuring they have the support they need to succeed. Her dedication extends beyond teaching as she works tirelessly to create a well-rounded environment for her students, addressing their basic needs so they can focus on their learning.

Notably, she was also selected as a Champion Teacher for Pemulihan Khas at the state level. Her proactive approach, not only in academic support but also in addressing the welfare of her students, highlights her exceptional qualities as an educator and showcases her unwavering dedication to ensuring that every child under her care has the opportunity to thrive.

Kalaichelvi follows her own principles, which include practicing fairness, patience, and empathy. She says that she will always treat all her students fairly, regardless of their religion, wealth, or background. As a remedial teacher, she remains patient with her students. If they don’t perform well, she never uses their struggles as an excuse, instead focusing on finding ways to help them improve.

Kalaichelvi’s students come from diverse family backgrounds, with some living with single parents, others in welfare homes, and some being raised by their grandparents. Understanding the unique circumstances each child faces, Kalaichelvi feels a deep responsibility to provide more than just academic support. She believes that, as a teacher, she must also serve as a caregiver and a source of stability for her students. By offering emotional guidance, encouragement, and understanding, she steps into the role of a parental figure, ensuring that her students feel supported and cared for, both in their personal lives and their educational journey.

Her commitment goes beyond teaching; she nurtures her students, helping them grow into confident individuals despite the challenges they may face at home. Teacher Kalaichelvi Jayamohan’s exceptional dedication, innovative teaching methods, and unwavering commitment to her students make her a truly deserving finalist for the Malaysia Teacher Prize 2024.
