In an extraordinary cultural exchange, 11 gifted performers from Malaysia’s Padma Nrithyalaya Arts, led by artistic director Vinosree Shangkar, proudly represented their nation at the Deepotsav Festival in Ayodhya, India. This momentous occasion, facilitated by the Indian Cultural Centre of the High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur, took place on October 29th and 30th.

The event not only highlighted Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage but also marked a historic achievement for Padma Nrithyalaya Arts, making it the first Malaysian dance academy to perform in Ayodhya—the birthplace of Lord Rama—celebrating Deepavali there for the first time in 500 years.

The Deepotsav Festival, organized by the Government of India, is one of the country’s most prestigious cultural celebrations. This year, it held special significance due to its connection with the Ram Janmabhoomi temple and the recent Prana Pratishthan ceremony of the Ram Lalla idol.

The festival featured elaborate rituals, vibrant cultural performances, and the lighting of hundreds of thousands of diyas (oil lamps), setting a new Guinness World Record. This magnificent display symbolized the triumph of good over evil and commemorated Lord Ram’s victorious return to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana.

Rama Sita at Badi Devkali Mandir

Padma Nrithyalaya Arts, renowned for its mastery in Bharatanatyam, delivered a captivating performance titled Ramayana. This presentation beautifully narrated key moments from the epic, including the divine meeting of Lord Rama and Sita, the Swayamvaram (Sita’s marriage selection ceremony), and their subsequent wedding. Deeply inspired by Indian mythology, the production offered an artistic rendition of one of the most cherished tales from the Ramayana, resonating with audiences worldwide. The performance was live-streamed on YouTube by prominent platforms such as CNN, Times Now, and other leading Indian news channels.

The performances were held at two prestigious venues: the Badi Kali Devi premises on October 29th and Ram Katha Park on October 30th. The event at Ram Katha Park was honored by the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who attended as the Chief Guest. Joining him were distinguished dignitaries, including representatives from the Uttar Pradesh Cultural Department and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). The participation of such eminent guests highlighted the festival’s significance, making it an unforgettable experience for the performers of Padma Nrithyalaya Arts.

Padma Nrithyalaya Arts’ involvement in the Deepotsav Festival was a proud moment for Malaysia, showcasing the significance of cultural diplomacy and the power of art in promoting mutual understanding between Malaysia and India. The festival also featured performances from other nations, including Myanmar, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Thailand, each presenting their unique traditional dance interpretations of the Ramayana.

For Padma Nrithyalaya Arts, performing in Ayodhya during such a historic time made their participation not only an artistic achievement but also a spiritual and cultural milestone. The dancers brought the epic tale to life with their intricate choreography and expressive storytelling, capturing the essence of this sacred union. The performance ended with a loud cheer of “Jai Shree Ram” from the audience.

The dancers had the honor of visiting the Ram Temple on Deepavali, a meaningful experience made possible through the support of the Cultural Department of the Uttar Pradesh government, India.

The performances by Padma Nrithyalaya Arts at the Deepotsav Festival in Ayodhya stand as a landmark achievement, highlighting Malaysia’s artistic excellence on an international platform and celebrating the rich cultural connection between India and Southeast Asia. This remarkable experience serves as an inspiration for future generations, demonstrating the profound role of the arts in fostering cultural exchange and unity.
