IndiGo Airlines has announced the launch of daily direct flights between Chennai and Penang, starting on December 21, 2024. Penang will become IndiGo’s third direct destination in Malaysia, joining Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi. This new route is designed to meet the increasing demand for travel between Chennai and Penang, offering a convenient and cost-effective option for both business and leisure travelers. In addition, IndiGo will also resume its services between Bengaluru and Kuala Lumpur, starting from the same date, December 21, 2024.
Penang’s tourism industry is poised for a major boost with IndiGo Airlines’ announcement of a new daily direct flight between Chennai and Penang, according to Penang State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee (PETACE) Chairman Wong Hon Wai. He emphasized that the launch marks an important step in strengthening Penang’s connections with India. This initiative follows his visit to India earlier this year, where he actively promoted Penang’s tourism and business opportunities and explored potential collaborations with Indian tourism partners, including the low-cost carrier IndiGo.

Mr. Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, said, “We are extremely pleased to expand our network into Malaysia even further with the launch of daily, non stop, flights from Chennai to Penang. IndiGo will now operate 28 weekly flights from India to Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and Penang in Malaysia. This expansion underscores IndiGo’s commitment to connecting not just major hubs, but also emerging destinations like Langkawi & Penang, offering options for business as well as leisure. IndiGo remains committed to delivering an affordable, timely, courteous, and hassle free travel experience across our expansive network.”
With direct flights now linking India to Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, and Penang, IndiGo is not only boosting tourism but also strengthening the trade relationship between India and Malaysia. India ranks as Malaysia’s fifth-largest source market, and these new routes are set to further enhance both economic and cultural exchanges. IndiGo, which already operates several flights to Malaysia, will provide a faster and more convenient travel option with its new Chennai-Penang service, reducing travel time from 7 hours to just 4. Additionally, Chennai will act as a key hub for travelers from Bengaluru, Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai on their way to Penang.
Travelers looking to plan their journey can make bookings through IndiGo’s official website or via the airline’s mobile application.
