Every religion in this universe has its own sacred texts, encompassing elements of Dharma, Bhakti, and guidance on leading a fruitful life.

In Hinduism, the most sacred text is the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita.

This divine scripture was revealed to the world by Lord Krishna when he recited it to the mighty Pandava warrior, Arjuna, during the Kurukshetra war in the Mahabharata.

It has been over 5,000 years since the Gita was bestowed upon the world, and for centuries, devotees have observed Gita Jayanti in the month of Margashirsha on the auspicious day of Mokshada Ekadashi.

This year, the celebration falls on today, December 11, marking the 5,161st anniversary of the Bhagavad Gita.

History of the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita

The text was revealed to Arjuna during a moment of profound self-doubt. Arjuna, reluctant to fulfil his duty as a Kshatriya (warrior), hesitated to fight against his own kin and revered masters, who stood on the opposing side.

It was then that Lord Krishna imparted the wisdom of the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, guiding Arjuna to overcome his doubts and realise his dharma.

Krishna emphasised that duties, no matter how burdensome, must be performed selflessly for the betterment of the world.

According to the Mahabharata, Lord Hanuman, Sanjaya, and King Dhritarashtra were among the first to witness the revelation of the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, alongside Arjuna.

One of the most famous verses from the Bhagavad Gita is:

Yada Yada Hi Dharmasya
Glanir Bhavati Bharata
Abhyutthanam Adharmasya
Tadaatmanam Srijamyaham
Paritranaya Sadhunam
Vinashaya Cha Dushkritam
Dharma-Samsthapanarthaya
Sambhavami Yuge Yuge

(Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 4, Verses 7–8)

Whenever there is a decline in righteousness and an increase in sinfulness, O Arjuna, at that time I manifest myself on Earth. I appear to protect the virtuous, annihilate the wicked, and re-establish the principles of Dharma, age after age.

The Bhagavad Gita, comprising 700 verses, is a timeless scripture that transcends religious and cultural boundaries. Its wisdom delves into the essence of human existence, offering profound insights into the nature of life, duty, and spirituality.

Through its teachings, the Gita provides practical guidance on overcoming doubts, fears, and challenges, encouraging individuals to embrace their responsibilities with courage and selflessness.

It addresses fundamental questions about the purpose of life, the path to inner peace, and the means to attain liberation (moksha).

Each verse offers a treasure trove of philosophical and ethical principles, emphasising the importance of balance in action, detachment from results, and unwavering devotion to higher ideals.

By following the teachings of the Gita, one can find the tools to overcome life’s misgivings and experience true happiness, satisfaction, fulfilment, and self-discovery. It serves as a beacon of hope, guiding humanity toward a life of meaning and spiritual enlightenment.

Observing Gita Jayanti

On this auspicious occasion, devotees recite the Bhagavad Gita. Prayers are offered to Lord Krishna, accompanied by kirtans and bhajans. Many devotees also distribute copies of the scripture, encouraging others to embrace its teachings and benefit from its eternal wisdom.
