Ever noticed the usage of copper in a Hindu household, particularly in the vessels that hold water? I’ve always wondered why the water was stored there, and when my young self asked my mother why, she usually finishes by saying, “It’s good for your health.”

I also noticed that drinking water from a copper bottle tasted much better than drinking water from a regular plastic bottle. It’s so cool and refreshing. Well, I had no idea water could taste better in a copper bottle.

Like any other practice in Hinduism which has a rationale back story to it, this practice has also similar scientific reason.

Water purification occurs naturally when it is stored in a copper vessel

In today’s modern world, where we have UV filters and RO purifiers to purify water, storing water in metal containers may seem archaic and needless. But can you see how advanced we  were in the earlier ages, before the emergence of these technologies?

Helps balance all three doshas (Kapha, Vata and Pitta)

Drinking copper-enriched water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, according to Ayurveda, helps balance all three doshas (Kapha, Vata and Pitta). The energy of movement is vata; the energy of digestion or metabolism is pitta; and the energy of lubrication and structure is kapha. This also ensures the proper functioning of various organs and metabolic processes.

It is capable of killing all microorganisms found in water

Microorganisms such as molds, fungi, algae, and bacteria could be harmful to the body. By storing water in a copper bottle, the Oligodynamic Effect refers to the fact that this water now has the ability to kill harmful microbes, fungi, and bacteria.

It also serves to maintain the body’s pH (acid-alkaline) balance

Failure to maintain a balanced pH value will have serious consequences for your body over time. A pH of less than 7.4 is considered suboptimal, and it creates an ideal environment for bacteria, mold, and viruses to grow. A low or acidic pH causes the body to store acid in our fat cells, leading to the production of more fat cells.

Contributes as an anti-ageing component

Copper is an all-natural treatment for fine lines and wrinkles on the face. It is known for its powerful anti-oxidant and cell-forming properties, which aid in the fight against free radicals, which are one of the primary causes of fine lines. It also promotes the growth of new, healthy skin cells.

Copper is a trace mineral that is necessary for human health. Our lives have recently shifted to a “No plastic” phase, and copper bottles or vessels are a better alternative. However, take into consideration how long you’ll be storing your water. A copper charged water can be made by keeping a copper bottle filled with water overnight (8 hours), according to Ayurveda.
