Malaysian students have consistently excelled on international stages, bringing pride to the nation.
Adding to this list are the students from SJK(T) Masai, who recently participated in an international drama competition held in Shenzhen, China, and won the gold medal.
The competition, conducted on December 8, also saw the students clinch the Most Impressive Onstage Performance award.
The school’s drama teacher, Dr. R. Khasturi, explained that the competition initially began online, with participants required to submit their entries in video format.
The students submitted their video in April and were thrilled to win the gold award, which earned them an invitation to perform at the international drama festival in China.
SJK(T) Masai was among 16 schools that performed at the festival and the sole representative from Malaysia.
A team of 18 students from the school performed a drama titled The Princess of Borneo, based on the famous folktale of Puteri Santubong and Puteri Sejinjang from Sarawak.
The performance was delivered entirely in English, showcasing Malaysian culture to an international audience. The students prepared rigorously for the drama, practicing diligently throughout the year.
Adding to their achievements, two students, P. Bhargavi and T. Durga, who played the lead roles, won the Best Actor award for their outstanding performances.
This marked the second time the school brought home medals for Malaysia.
In 2018, a different group of 11 students from SJK(T) Masai participated in the Hong Kong International Drama Competition, where they secured third place among over 40 participants.
Their performance, based on the Ramayana epic with Javanese influences, also won the Best Costume award. Inspired by that achievement, the school aimed for the top position this year and successfully achieved it.
Dr. Khasturi highlighted the overwhelming support from parents, who actively contributed by designing costumes, arranging food, and organizing transport.
The efforts of the school headmaster, R. Rajeeswari, and the parent-teacher association chairperson, K. Morilli, were also instrumental in making this success possible.
The school hopes its achievement will inspire other schools to participate in similar international competitions, using them as stepping stones for greater accomplishments in the future.
