In an uplifting initiative, the Penang Hindu Association (PHA) organized a “Back-To-School”, aid distribution event at Klinik Derma Sivasanta on Riveroad. The purpose to the event was to help with the financial burden on families from the B40 group, offering all the support needed to ensure their kids remain in school and continue their education.
At the event, PHA president Datuk P.Murugiah made a highlight on the harsh realities faced by families in Penang due to the rising cost of living. He noted that house rental and basic food expenses have increased significantly, creating a pressure on many families out there who earn below or maximum of RM1700 per month.
“A meal for a family of five can cost up to RM30 daily, which amounts to RM900 a month, even today there are many families who survive with just one meal per day”. Says Murugiah.

Aid Distribution to Support Education
In the event over 120 childrens from primary, secondary and even college students from B40 families and several orphanages received vouchers worth RM150, to get themselves school essential items such as uniforms, bags, shoes and stationeries. With the vouchers, for the childrens that face vision problems are given free spectacles and 10 laptops/tablets were given to support their education.
“These childrens come from hardcore poor families. We just want to do our best to help them stay in school,” said Murugiah.
He also shared the emotional challenge faced by these youngsters, often experiencing the feelings of shame and exclusion at school due to their inability to afford basic necessities.

This initiative made by PHA, is to ensure no child feels left out because of their financial situation.
The president has also expressed his pride in witnessing the other former childrens who received this aid previously is now giving back to the community.
“Some of those who received aid from PHA in the past are now teachers, doctors, nurses, and lawyers. They return to ask how they can help others. I tell them to give back to society,” he shared”.
The vouchers were all received by the Penang City Councilor Nicholas J.W, who also appreciated PHA for their efforts to help the ones in need.
