The Foundation for the Development of Tamil Schools in Malaysia has proposed the government to allocate special funds to upgrade the SJKT schools to enhance the facilities, to make it safe space and look more appealing to parents. The initiative aims to bring SJKT schools to the level of national schools, ensuring they remain relevant in the country’s education system.
The president of the foundation, Datuk T.Murugiah, emphasized the need for increased funding to improve various aspects of Tamil schools education. He highlighted the importance of enhancing teacher salaries, advancing school infrastructures and integrating modern learning technology to elevate the quality of education including expanding access to rural areas.
He also pointed to the importance of a flexible SJKT curriculum that strengthens students proficiency in other languages like Malay and English alongside Tamil. He believes this approach will help Tamil School students remain competitive within the broader national education system. Just yesterday, the data on students who enrolled in year 1 Tamil schools were released and the number has decreased compared to last year. This initiative will be helpful and might improve the Tamil schools.
Murugiah also underscored that education is the foundation of community development and cautioned against the landscape and view of SJKT schools in Malaysia’s education landscape. He also raised his concern over the declining enrollment, warning that if this issue is not addressed properly, it could lead to a weakening of the Tamil education system and a decline in the use of the Tamil language in Malaysia.
The call for special government funding aims to secure the future of Tamil schools, and ensure they provide good quality of education and preserve Tamil language and culture in Malaysia.
