The rescheduling of Tamil and Tamil literature class hours at Klang Raja Mahadi Secondary School has sparked significant controversy, raising concerns among students, parents, and the wider Tamil-speaking community. Many fear that the changes could undermine the importance of these subjects and impact students’ ability to engage with their linguistic and cultural heritage.
In an effort to find an amicable resolution, Gunaraj met with the school administration to discuss the issue and explore possible solutions that would address the concerns of all stakeholders while ensuring the continued prominence of Tamil education.

“During my visit, the teachers shared with me the number of students enrolled in Tamil and Tamil literature classes at the school, and I was deeply shocked by the figures. Raja Mahadi Secondary School is one of the prominent schools in the Klang region, with a large number of Indian students. However, each year, only about a hundred or even fewer students choose to study Tamil and Tamil literature,” he said.
Therefore, the enrollment of students in Tamil and Tamil literature courses in secondary schools must increase. In particular, students transitioning from Tamil primary schools should be required to take Tamil as a subject, and it is the responsibility of parents to ensure this, Gunaraj emphasized.
The declining number of students enrolling in Tamil and Tamil literature courses, coupled with scheduling changes, poses a serious challenge to the preservation of the language in secondary schools. This issue demands immediate attention and collective action from educators, parents, and the community. As Gunaraj stressed, it is crucial to encourage more students, especially those from Tamil primary schools, to continue studying Tamil. Only through proactive measures can we safeguard the future of Tamil education and ensure that future generations remain connected to their linguistic and cultural heritage.
