Malaysian Tamil cinema has been steadily evolving, reaching new heights with compelling storytelling, dedicated artists, and skilled technicians working tirelessly to elevate the industry. In this exciting progression, acclaimed Malaysian director Shanjhey, widely known as Sun – J Perumal, has achieved a remarkable milestone. His upcoming theatrical film Macai has been officially selected for the prestigious International Film Festival Rotterdam. Notably, Macai stands as the only Malaysian film chosen for this esteemed festival, marking a proud moment for the country’s cinema on the global stage.
Sun-J Perumal has been a storyteller for nearly two decades. Hailing from Parit Buntar, Perak, he first garnered international recognition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) in 2007 with his short film Thaipoosam (2006). His debut feature film, Jagat (2015), made history by becoming the first non-Malay-language film in 28 years to win Best Film at the Malaysian Film Festival.

Now, with his latest film Macai, Sun-J Perumal has once again pushed boundaries. The film has been selected for the prestigious Big Screen Competition at IFFR 2025, making it the only Malaysian entry in the category. This competition serves as a bridge between mainstream, classic, and arthouse cinema, featuring 14 exceptional films from around the world.
Although the Big Screen Award was ultimately won by Swedish filmmaker Jon Blåhed for Raptures, Sun-J Perumal and his team took immense pride in having their film premiere on such a prestigious platform. Being selected for this esteemed festival and showcased on the global stage is a significant honor for Malaysian cinema.
The world premiere on February 2 was held at IFFR’s largest venue, the IMAX theatre, playing to a packed audience of cinephiles from diverse backgrounds. The film was met with admiration and praise from the attendees.
Macai follows the gripping story of a drug dealer who lands in trouble after losing a shipment he was transporting for a local kingpin. Fearing the wrath of his ruthless boss, he embarks on a desperate journey to make amends. This intense and fast-paced film cleverly subverts genre conventions, delivering a thrilling cinematic experience.
Produced by Skyzen Studios, the Tamil-language film features Karnan Kanapathy in the lead role, supported by a talented ensemble cast including Kuben Mahadevan, Irfan Zaini, Fabian Loo, Subashini Asokan, and Susan Lankester. Macai is now gearing up for its release soon.
With Macai, Sun-J Perumal continues to cement his reputation as a visionary filmmaker, pushing the boundaries of Malaysian Tamil cinema onto the global stage. Its selection at the International Film Festival Rotterdam not only highlights the film’s artistic and narrative strength but also showcases the growing impact of Malaysian cinema in the international arena. As Macai gears up for its release, audiences eagerly await its arrival, anticipating yet another groundbreaking cinematic experience from one of Malaysia’s most celebrated filmmakers.
