The Semmozhi Sangamam debate competition 2025 has once again provided a dynamic platform for university students across Malaysia to celebrate and appreciate the Tamil language. Organised by the USM Health Campus Indian Cultural Association, the event was aimed to foster linguistic pride and strengthen unity among students from different backgrounds.
According to Project Director P.Logita, this initiative serves to promote love and pride for Tamil language while highlighting its cultural and historic significance. She also said this programme is not just to preserve and celebrate Tamil but to also ensure that younger generations continue to recognize its value.
This year’s competition saw the participation with 6 public higher education institutions, including Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Kubang Kerian campus, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) Tuanku Bainun campus, University Sultan Zainal Abidin, and Politeknik Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin.
The debate topics covered a variety of relevant themes, including economics, language preservation and youth contributions to society. These discussions encouraged students to critically engage with contemporary issues while showcasing their skills in Tamil.

The final round witnessed an impressive display of linguistic mastery, with Sol Venthar team from IPG Tuanku Bainun campus emerging as the debate champions. The winning duo, T. Elavarasi and R.Mathiventhan Naidu, both aged 22, took RM1,000 home in cash along with trophies and certificates.
Reflecting on their victory, the champions expressed their commitment to further promote Tamil language, especially among students in school. The two shared,
“This win marks the beginning of our journey to create greater awareness and appreciation for Tamil. We hope to inspire more young people to engage with the language beyond academic settings”.
The closing ceremony held at USM’s Health Campus in Kubang Kerian underscored the event’s mission to celebrate the importance and beauty of Tamil while building ties stronger among students nationwide. The Semmozhi Sangamam debate stands as a testament that Tamil is also a language anyone should feel proud of.
With increasing participation and growing enthusiasm, the competition is expected to continue it’s role as a significant cultural and intellectual stage in the years to come.
