The long-awaited Penang Hill cable car project is making steady progress, with tower installation works set to begin at the end of July, according to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Chow confirmed that piling works at the project site are progressing smoothly and expressed confidence that the project will be completed within the targeted timeline.
“This project is proceeding as planned and we believe it will be completed on time, especially after the cable car project concessionaire, Hartasuma Sdn Bhd, also joined my official working delegation to Austria and Switzerland last week”, he told the reporters during a press briefing at his office in Komtar.
Chow noted that the overseas visit, held from 10th June to 16th June, provided valuable insights into cable car and funicular railway systems in both Austria and Switzerland, two countries well-known for their advanced alpine transport infrastructure. These insights, he said, would help further strengthen the implementation of the Penang Hill cable car system.

“There is still time to make improvements based on the visit. We believe that with cooperation from reputable international companies in this industry, the project will be successful implemented”, he added
The Penang Hill cable car project is scheduled for completion by December 2025, after which it will undergo a three-month trial and dry commissioning phase before opening to the public.
Once operational, the cable car system is expected to significantly improve accessibility to Penang Hill, offering both locals and tourists a faster, more efficient alternative to the existing funicular railway.
