The Malaysian Indian community mourns the passing of Tan Sri Dato’ Dr.M.Thambirajah, founder of the Sri Murugan Centre whose work in education and spirituality has uplifted generations of students over more than four decades.

According to Nambikkai, his passing was confirmed by Surain Kanda, the Co-Director of Sri Murugan Centre, who acknowledged the profound loss felt by the institution, it’s alumni, and the broader society shaped by his vision.

A Lifelong Educator

Dr Thambirajah began his journey as a humble teacher in Sungai Petani in 1962. What followed was a remarkable rise in education, from teacher to lecturer, and eventually, to receiving a doctorate in recognition of his academic contributions. But more than personal titles, his legacy lies in the impact he made on thousands of young minds.

Driven by the belief that education was the most powerful tool to uplift communities, he founded the Sri Murugan Centre. Under his leadership, it became more than an educational centre. It became a movement, rooted in academic discipline, spiritual values and cultural pride.

Dr Thambirajah, believed that true education must nourish both intellect and character. He introduced pioneering programmes such as Kalvi Viratham and Kalvi Yathirai. His methods were seen as revolutionary, instilling self-worth, identity, and purpose in thousands of Indian Malaysian youths.

His vision was simple yet profound, to raise students who are not only academically successful but also morally grounded and spiritually aware. For all the contributions he has made to education and social development, Dr Thambirajah has received Malaysia’s highest civilian honors, ‘Tan Sri’ and ‘Dato’. And recognized with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award by the President of India.

Over the course of 42 years, Sri Murugan Centre produced more than 50,000 Indian graduates, many of whom went on to become professionals, educators and community leaders. His contribution is often described as an educational revolution within the Malaysian Indian community.

An Irrepaceable Loss

The passing of  Tan Sri Dato’ Dr.M.Thambirajah marks the end of an era. His presence, philosophy and unwavering commitment to community upliftment leave behind a void that will be deeply felt across generations. Yet his legacy will continue to live on.

As students, educators, and well wishers gather to remember him, the memory of Tan Sri Dato’ Dr.M.Thambirajah stands as a guiding light, reminding us that education, when paired with heart and heritage, can change the world.
