Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and M.Thinaah delivered a powerful performance in their opening match at the Japan Open 2025, just days after renewing their commitments to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) with a new four-year contract.

Facing Bulgaria’s world No.16 duo, Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva, Pearly and Thinaah were in control from the outset, securing a straight-game victory of 21-16, 21-14 in just 31 minutes at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. The dominant display comes as an early return on BAM’s long-term investment, as the world No.3 Malaysians aim to stay on track for Olympic glory at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

This confident win marks a strong start to a new chapter for the pair, whose form in recent months has been nothing short of impressive. Their 2025 season so far includes a title at the Thailand Open, a runner-up finish at the Indonesia Open, a semi-final spot at the Malaysian Masters, and a quarter-final appearance in Singapore, results that have kept them firmly among the world’s elite.

Their latest performance not only sends a message to their rivals but also reflects the renewed clarity and focus that BAM officials were hoping for following the resolution of their contract negotiations. With Pearly and Thinaah considered Malaysia’s best hope for a women’s doubles Olympic medal, the BAM leadership sees the partnership as central to its long-term ambitions.

Looking ahead, the Malaysian pair will take on the winner between Taiwan’s Hsieh Pei Shan-Huang En Tzu and the United States Francesca Corbett-Jeannie Gai in the second round.

With the pressure of contract talks now behind them, Pearly and Thinaah appear poised and ready to chase even bigger milestones, starting with a deep run on Tokyo.
