The late Tan Sri Dato’ M. Thambirajah, founder of the Sri Murugan Centre, was a visionary leader who firmly believed that education is the key to safeguarding the future of the Indian community in Malaysia. Guided by this noble mission, he established the Sri Murugan Centre across the nation, an institution that has since nurtured and produced over 50,000 Indian graduates. His remarkable contribution stands as a lasting legacy, a point highlighted by lawyer M. Mathiyalagan during a memorial gathering held in his honor by the Ipoh Sri Murugan Centre.
He noted that the Sri Murugan Centre was founded with the vision of shaping the Indian community in this country into a well-educated society, driven by the noble aspiration of increasing the number of Indian students entering universities.

He explained that, as an initial step, priority was given to preparing Form 6 students for their examinations. Subsequently, the Sri Murugan Centre extended its support to Indian students undertaking the Form 5 SPM examination. In addition, assistance was later provided to both Tamil school and national school students in preparing for the UPSR examination after Form 3, he noted.
Over the years, Tan Sri Dr. M. Thambirajah integrated education with spirituality to cultivate self-motivation and inner strength among students. Through this vision, he introduced spiritual initiatives such as the Education Vow, with the aim of ensuring that students gained not only academic success but also personal growth, he said.
He devoted his life to advancing the educational progress of the Indian community in this country. As a result of his tireless efforts, many Indian families today have produced doctors, lawyers, engineers, as well as directors and officers serving in both government and private sectors—standing as clear evidence of his vision and dedication, he commended.

At the event, attending parents shared their reflections on Tan Sri M. Thambirajah’s contributions to education. Former students of the Sri Murugan Centre—teacher Ravindran (Taiping), Dr. Sekar Narayanan (Ipoh), and teacher Karuppannan (Tangkak, Johor)—also conveyed their thoughts to the audience. The occasion was graced by the presence of the current director of the Sri Murugan Centre, Suren.
The memorial gathering not only honored the life and legacy of the late Tan Sri Dato’ M. Thambirajah but also highlighted the profound impact of his vision on the Indian community in Malaysia. Through the Sri Murugan Centre, his unwavering commitment to education and personal development has transformed thousands of lives and continues to inspire future generations. His legacy endures in the achievements of the many graduates who now serve society as professionals and leaders, a true reflection of his lifelong mission to uplift the community through education.
