In an unfortunate turn of events yesterday, strong winds and heavy rain caused all the tents at the Brickfields Deepavali Bazaar to collapse, causing significant inconvenience to the sellers.

Today, Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), announced that 118 new tents will be installed to replace the damaged ones. While the number of tents remains the same, the new ones are larger—measuring 10×10 feet compared to the previous 8×8 feet—providing more space and sturdiness.

Addressing traders’ concerns about tent allocation and the lot balloting system, Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha emphasized that the process was transparent and modeled after systems used during Ramadan and Aidilfitri bazaars, with some modifications to ensure greater fairness.

MIC Deputy President Datuk Seri M Saravanan also noted that the old tents were unsuitable, particularly given the heavy traffic and exposed location of the bazaar.
