In conjunction with the Thaipusam celebrations in Penang, Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP), Steven Sim announced a total allocation of RM150,000 for two Hindu temples in the state, reaffirming the government’s commitment to cultural heritage and community development.
RM100,000 has been allocated to the historic Sri Balathandayuthapani Temple at Waterfall Hill, while RM50,000 will be channeled to the nearby Sri Meenakshi Sundereswarar Temple. Sri Balathandayuthapani Temple, which is more than 200 years old, is one of Penang’s most significant Hindu landmarks and plays a central role during Thaipusam every year.
Speaking to the media during his visit on Sunday afternoon, Steven Sim said the allocation is aimed at improving facilities in the temple, and preserving religious heritage that has been part of Penang’s multicultural identity.
As part of the Thaipusam observances, several resting shelters were set up near the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple to provide comfort and relief for devotees undertaking the annual pilgrimage, These facilities were arranged with the support of agencies under the KUSKOP ministry.
In addition to religious support, various KUSKOP agencies were present at the event to engage with the public and share information on entrepreneurship programmes, youth initiatives and small business assistance available through the ministry.
Steven Sim also highlighted that the allocation reflects recognition of the Indian community’s contributions to Malaysia’s social, cultural and economic development, particularly in Penang. Numerous volunteers and ministry staff were also on hand throughout the celebration to assist devotees, manage crowd movement and ensure the smooth conduct of the festival.
Thaipusam is one of the most important festivals for Hindus, drawing thousands of devotees annually to Penang’s temples, especially the iconic Sri Balathandayuthapani Temple, which remains a focal point of devotion and cultural heritage.
