The Malaysian government will begin distributing the RM100 Subangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) aid starting Monday, 9th February, as part of ongoing efforts to help Malaysians cope with rising living costs.
The programme provides a one-off RM100 credit to all Malaysians aged 18 and above, with a total allocation of RM2.2 billion. It falls under the broader Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) framework, which focuses on targeted financial assistance and essential support.
Unlike previous aid programmes, no manual application is required. The credit will be automatically disbursed to recipient MyKad, making the process seamless and accessible. Eligible individuals can begin checking their eligibility status from today via the official portal. Once credited, the RM100 balance can be used at participating merchants nationwide until 31st December, giving recipients flexibility in managing their spending throughout the year.
To ensure accessibility, especially for rural and underserved communities, the government has significantly expanded the merchant network. Participating outlets have increased from 700 in 2024 to over 10,700 nationwide as of early February. This includes around 3,000 small traders, with plans to grow the number of participating small grocery shops to 10,000 by the end of the year.
The expansion is expected to reduce the average travel distance for rural recipients from 10 kilometres to just 7 kilometers, making it easier for communities outside urban areas to benefit from the aid.
In addition, the Ministry of Finance is studying a proposal to widen the list of eligible purchases, potentially allowing recipients to use the credit for wet food items such as meat and vegetables. While still under review to ensure food safety and quality standards, the move could further strengthen the programme’s impact on daily household needs.
With broader reach, simplified disbursement and potential enhancement on the horizon, the RM100 SARA aid is positioned as a practical measure to provide immediate relief while supporting local businesses across the country.
