Education Ministry Stresses Balanced Approach as Revised Syllabus Rolls Out in Stages Next Year

A new History curriculum will be introduced in stages starting next year initially involving only Year one and Form One students. The Education Ministry will ensure that Malaysia’s revised national history curriculum remains balanced and free from political narratives when it is rolled out, Deputy Minister YB Wong Kah Woh told the Parliament.

He said the development of the curriculum follows a transparent and structured process, involving historian, academicians and key institutions such as the National Archives, alongside consultations with educators, communities and professional bodies.

“All matters related to the curriculum must undergo due process. The curriculum must also remain balanced and free from political narratives, this is the position of the ministry,” he said during the Minister’s Question Time.

YB Wong added that the implementation will be expanded in 2028 to include Year two and Form Two students. While the History syllabus is implemented for a fixed period, it will be reviewed when necessary to ensure it remains relevant and aligned with the National Education Philosophy.

YB Wong was responding to a proposal by Amanah’s Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan, who suggested that major political events in Malaysia’s recent history to be incorporated into the syllabus.  He argued that exposing students to modern political developments would help younger Malaysians better understand the country’s contemporary political landscape, alongside learning about leaders involved in independence and
