Manam is an Astro series that recently concluded in the last week of March. The show is an adaptation of the Malay series Layang-Layang Perkahwinan. Directed by SD Puvanendran and produced by Seelan Manoharen, who also wrote the script for this series. Manam features an ensemble cast, including Surrya Prakash, Jayshree, Subashini Asokan, Mathialagan, Ashwini Nambiar, and others. Among the cast, Mathialagan and Ashwini Nambiar truly captured our hearts with their performances as Selvanayagam and Leela.
Selvanayagam and Leela
Mathialagan and Ashwini Nambiar portrayed Selvanayagam and Leela, the parents of Varun, played by Surrya Prakash. Both actors are well-known for their work in the Singapore Tamil industry, where they have made a name for themselves. Their characters, Selvanayagam and Leela, have left a lasting impression on audiences.
Mathialagan noted that the Malaysian Indian television industry is appreciated for its support, with many viewers embracing the work produced. Having acted in a Malaysian series before, he felt that taking on the role of Selvanayagam would showcase his versatility on screen. This motivated him to accept the role.

Meanwhile, Ashwini mentioned that not many actors are eager to portray negative roles. However, she found Leela’s character arc compelling. Initially willing to do anything to protect her son and obedient to her husband, Leela ultimately finds her voice and stands up for herself.
Ashwini believes that playing this character could have a significant impact on women, showcasing their strength and resilience.
Connection to Their Characters
Mathialagan has mentioned that he had previously played a negative role, but portraying Selvanayagam was different because the character has many layers. Selvanayagam is a father with a strong male ego who will do anything to ensure that everything goes his way. He exerts control over his entire family, even while leading a secret life. Although the story was already presented in Layang-Layang Perkahwinan Mathialagan had to give a new life into the character with an Indian touch for the audience.
As a result, Selvanayagam remains in our minds as a ruthless villain and a dominating father who does not hesitate to take extreme measures to achieve his goals.

Meanwhile, Ashwini noted that she and her character Leela share many similarities, particularly in their emotional and sensitive natures. In real life, she places a high value on relationships, especially as a mother. This made playing Leela an emotionally resonant experience for her, as she instinctively tapped into her maternal instincts. Consequently, she quickly connected with Leela’s character and delivered a memorable performance.
From Singapore to Malaysia
Both Mathialagan and Ashwini Nambiar from Singapore have now worked on a Malaysian Indian television series titled Manam. Mathialagan expressed his love for the Malaysian Indian film and television industry, mentioning that he has been listening to and watching Malaysian dramas and radio dramas since he was young.
He shared that working in the Malaysian industry has made him happy, as it is a pleasure to see Malaysian Indian actors come together to collaborate and deliver their best to the audience.
He also noted that, compared to the past, the Malaysian Tamil film industry is improving, with many new talents emerging, not just among actors but also among directors and producers. He feels grateful to be part of this production.

Ashwini Nambiar, who has worked not only in Singapore but also in India, emphasized her appreciation for the professionalism within the Malaysian Indian television industry.
With her experience across various industries, she remarked on how each industry’s dynamics differ. She observed that everyone was fully invested in their work and conscious of their responsibilities, even while having a good time on set.
Takeaways from Manam
The series Manam addresses themes such as marital affairs, child custody, and women’s freedom within marriage.
Mathialagan emphasizes that viewers should understand that every decision comes with consequences.
The intent of Manam is not to promote marital affairs, but to illustrate the consequences that can arise from being involved in one. He points out that although crime action is a popular genre in the film industry, this does not mean that such movies endorse crime; rather, they demonstrate the consequences faced by individuals involved. Similarly, it is important to take away positive lessons and learn about the outcomes of poor decisions.
Ashwini Nambiar notes that Manam is a technically successful project within the Malaysian Indian television industry. The series demonstrates that our community is capable of producing high-quality films and series, excelling not only in direction but also in technical aspects, production, and talent.
Additionally, Ashwini highlights that Manam encourages women to stand up for themselves. Given that the series addresses issues present in our community, it is crucial for audiences to recognize the consequences of poor decisions. It is especially important for women facing similar situations to know that it is okay to seek help.
The Manam series concluded at the end of March, but the issues and topics it highlighted remain a hot topic of discussion. Mathialagan and Ashwini Nambiar delivered masterful performances as Selvanayagam and Leela. Additionally, the entire cast and crew showcased impressive performances. Manam serves as an example of the high quality of Indian series and films. Following Manam, there is a strong expectation to see more of Mathialagan and Ashwini Nambiar in our local series or movies.
