Dato’ Sundarajoo Somu, the Penang State Housing and Environment Committee, has extended financial assistance to a young medical graduate who is set to begin her housemanship in Sabah. The financial aid was provided after the case was brought to his attention through a referral. The young woman had recently completed her MBBS studies and is preparing to begin her housemanship training which is compulsory.
He mentioned that behind her achievement is a story of sacrifice, led by her mother, who is a single parent and sole breadwinner since the passing of her husband 17 years ago. The mother is running a small hawker business, who worked tirelessly over the years to support her two children’s education, ultimately raising both as graduates despite financial hardship.
Initially, Dato’ Sundarajoo agreed to contribute RM1,000 to assist with the graduate’s transportation and accommodation expenses. However, following an appeal highlighting the family’s financial constraints, he agreed to contribute RM2,000 to better support her immediate needs as she prepares to travel to Sabah for her housemanship training. While the contribution may be modest, it is intended to help reduce the financial burden on the family and support the young doctor’s first steps into public service.
In his reflection, Sundarajoo emphasised the importance of education and the need to ensure that financial challenges do not prevent capable students from pursuing their dreams. He noted that supporting education is not only about financial aid, but also about uplifting families and nurturing future contributors to society.
