Nishan Velupillay has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Tamil footballer to take part in the FIFA World Cup 2026. The 25-year-old player will represent Australia in the tournament, which is scheduled to start in June 2026. Australia is grouped in Group D, alongside Turkey, the United States, and Paraguay. The team’s first match will be against Turkey on June 13, 2026.
Nishan’s father, Sasinath Velupillay, is of Tamil descent, while his mother, Gillian Velupillay, has Anglo-Indian roots. Nishan was born and raised in Melbourne and went to Mazenod College in Mulgrave. He advanced through the youth system at Glen Eira FC before ultimately joining the Melbourne Victory Academy.

In October 2024, Nishan made his senior international debut when coach Popovic brought him in for a 2026 World Cup qualifying match against China. He entered the game as a substitute in the 83rd minute and scored just seven minutes later, securing a 3-1 victory. This remarkable debut introduced him to both Australian football supporters and the Tamil community worldwide.
Since then, Nishan Velupillay has accumulated seven senior caps and netted three goals, all of which were in World Cup qualifying matches. This performance highlights the trust Coach Popovic has in him during crucial moments.
Seventeen members of Australia’s 26-man squad have been selected for a FIFA World Cup for the first time, and Nishan Velupillay’s selection marks a significant achievement for Tamils within the diaspora.
