Lightning Risks During Outdoor Sports

Although lightning-related accidents are rare, they remain one of the most serious weather-related hazards for the people participating in outdoor sports. Football fields, which are open and exposed can become dangerous when thunderstorms occur.
Safety experts generally advise suspending outdoor sporting activities immediately when thunder is heard or lightning is seen, even if rainfall appears light. Organisers are encouraged to monitor weather conditions closely and ensure players, officials, and spectators move to safe shelter until the storm has completely passed.
