Indian-origin NASA astronaut Anil Menon is set to embark on his first space mission today (July 14, 2026), spending approximately eight months abroad the International Space Station (ISS) as part of Expedition 75. The mission marks a major milestone in his career and highlights the growing contributions of scientists and astronauts of Indian heritage to global space exploration.
Anil Menon is set to travel to the ISS Aboard the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft, launching from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Along with him Russian cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina will also join as the crew undertakes scientific research and technology demonstrations in microgravity.

From Doctor to NASA Astronaut
Before becoming an astronaut, Anil Menon built an impressive career spanning medicine, engineering and the military. He is an emergency medicine physician, mechanical engineer and colonel in the U.S. Space Force, with previous experience as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force.

He also served as SpaceX’s first flight surgeon, where he played a key role in developing medical support systems for the company’s human spaceflight missions. In 2021, Anil Menon was selected as part of NASA’s astronaut class and successfully completed astronaut training in 2024.
Conducting Research in Space
During his eight-month stay aboard the ISS, Anil Menon will carry out a series of scientific experiments aimed at advancing human spaceflight and improving life on Earth.
His work will include studying how prolonged exposure to microgravity affects the human body, particularly blood circulation and vein structure. He will also participate in testing innovative technologies, including a system that produces intravenous (IV) fluids using the ISS’s onboard drinking water supply. The research is expected to support future long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars while contributing to advancements in medical science and healthcare on Earth.

Anil Menon’s inspiring journey represents years of dedication across multiple disciplines, combining expertise in medicine, engineering and aerospace. His journey is also being celebrated as another proud achievement for the global Indian community, showcasing the impact of Indian-origin professionals in international space exploration.
As preparations continue for his launch, Anil Menon’s mission is expected to contribute valuable scientific knowledge while inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers and aspiring astronauts around the world.
